Judy Garland’s performance on this night in 1961 was captured on a live recording that would go on to spend 95 weeks on the U.S. album charts (including 13 weeks at #1) and sweep the 1962 Grammys. But the experience of seeing it live was clearly something else entirely. “She’ll be back in May,” wrote Frank Aston for the New York World-Telegram. “Try to get tickets. Just try. This kid is still a killer.”

Described as one of the greatest talents in Hollywood at her time, Garland was an all around performer. Winning three Oscars for her performance in The Wizard of Oz as well as the Grammys.

Mrs. Garland was an old Hollywood icon that will forever be remembered for her roles in classic films like Meet Me In St. Louis, A Star Is Born ans The Wizard Of Oz. She was signed to MGM at the young age of 13 and considered the original girl next door with her innocent looks and standing 4 ft. 11 in.

After leaving MGM and being married several times her career seemed weary until she got her break in the film adaptation of Annie Get Your Gun as Annie Oakley. Nervous about playing an unglamorous role and departing from her teen roles she was mistreated by the director. She went on to have many more starring and captivating roles. But the bad outweighed the good as the end of her life was nearing. Unable to maintain her bills and shows, Garland went to Broadway and making guest appearances. And found out she had acute hepatitis. She was told she would only have a few more years to live but wasn’t defeated but felt a weight was lifted, according to her biography, because for the first time the pressure was off of her.

For all her accomplishments and today being one of her biggest she will always be remembered and adored.
